Decorate Like a Designer: 5 Affordable Home Accessories

Decorate Like a Designer: 5 Affordable Home Accessories

A few home accessories in the right places can make all the difference. In a recent episode of The Housing Muse Podcast, I spotlighted several décor pieces that TV-designers love. Let’s breakdown a few more key elements in adding to your home’s style (along with some affordable finds, all under $100).

  1. Tabletop vases

Liven up your side tables, countertops or bookcases with a vase of fresh flowers or even faux plants (just be sure to splurge on any fancy fakes!). But it’s not just the flowers tucked inside that matters—the vase you put them in matters, too. Choose one in a trendy matte black, which really pops when mixed into otherwise all-white interiors. Gather up large and small vases and sprinkle them throughout the house, like this smaller vase (pictured below). Have one perched on top of an old book to fancy up your side table or bookshelf.

  1. Floor-length mirrors

Home designers love mirrors because they reflect light (and views) and can make a space feel brighter and more spacious. Add them to brighten a long, dark hallway. Or balance a large floor-length mirror in a bedroom for a high-end look.

  1. Candle elegance

Candles can add a flair of romance to your décor. Try a set of candles grouped together on a decorative tray or on a fireplace mantle. Fancy up a dining room table with a set of candle sticks—and better yet, make your next dinner party under candlelight. Taper candles, with their long slender forms, can add to the ambiance. (Bonus: They now make taper flameless candles, if you prefer the fake flame for your light.)

  1. Wooden tray accent

A wooden tray has become a staple in home design for many reasons. It’s the perfect spot for grouping your home accessories in what feels like a more intentional way. Place one on your living room’s ottoman to keep coasters or TV remotes stylishly tucked together. Add a small vase of flowers. Or, on the bathroom countertop, group toiletries, along with rolled-up hand towels, and a small succulent all on a wooden tray.

  1. Stylish storage baskets

Texture is a big deal lately in home design, and a sea grass basket can be the perfect way to texturize your space while also clearing the clutter. Use a basket at the front or back door for children to toss their shoes into (my favorite!), or place one near the fireplace to store those cozy blankets during the winter. Storage and good design is always the perfect combo!
